The Munsell color system was developed by art professor Albert Munsell (1958-1918) as a way to chart color based on hue, value, and chroma. Its basis in human perception measured in a systematic way might be why it has lasted so long as an effective color tool. Munsell also apparently disdained “foolish” color names, so his system uses numeric notation to identify color, which makes me feel a little Munsell 2.5pb 3.5/10.
Learn more about color in our exhibit, Color in a New Light, and find the Atlas of the Munsell Color System in the Digital Library for the exhibit.
